Microsoft and Nokia pool $24 million to bring in developers

Microsoft and Nokia have had a strategic partnership going for a while now, and from that partnership we've seen some very nice looking Nokia Windows Phone handsets hitting the streets at reasonable prices, and now the partnership is looking to build more developer support for their platforms.

Microsoft and Nokia have pledged to commit $12 million each in an effort to help fund developers working on apps for Windows Phone, Symbian and Series 40 devices. The AppCampus program is being created in association with Aalto University in Finland. It will begin in May and me run by Aalto University, and will help to fund developers working at the university. The goal of the program is to "create a new generation of self-sustaining mobile startups" according to the companies, and will certainly be a boon to both the Windows Phone Marketplace and Nokia Store.

It is always said that if there is enough developer support on a platform, the users will follow, and Microsoft and Nokia clearly believe that to be true. Only time will tell if this new initiative can help push forward Windows Phone, and keep Nokia's declining platforms from disappearing completely.
